Tantramar Marsh: A Brief History

The Tantramar Marshes is actually one of the four marshes that connect Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in Canada. Starting out as a land for farming in the late 1600s, it gradually became an area known for hay. In fact it was referred to as “the world’s biggest hayfield”. Of course, like any business, the demand for hay was reduced until such time it was no longer a substantial industry. The place was referred to as “tintamarre” in the past, which is French. It means “din”, which is the sound that the flocks of fowl makes at the same time. Over the past decades, a project was conducted by the Canadian Wildlife Service to reclaim the marshland for waterfowl and restore some of the wildlife that was once lost. These days, the Tantramar Marsh is a breeding area for some animal species and supports certain small businesses.

What is it made of?

Marshes in this area are a product of thousands of years of build up and deposits. In particular, they are comprised of clay and silt which were deposited and carried by the water that envelops the marsh. Research has proved that the marsh was developed from three to five thousand years. The Bay of Fundy, which varies in tidal range, is a huge factor in the formation of the marsh in this area, particularly the Tantramar Marsh. Now, over a period of time, when the tide or the marsh decreases in water, the once-submerged marshes will appear. As a result, what you will see now in Tantramar is a result of that process. It has then become home to thousands of migratory birds, animals and a bunch of other wildlife that makes the marshlands what it is today.

Points of Particular Interest

The Tantramar Marsh has points of interests in which you could take part of in the event that you get to visit the place. For one, the Tantramar Rail Trail is one you should not miss out on. The trail starts off on a wetland that is dyked which leads to the Tantramar Marsh itself. During the trek, you will come across a few farms which will lead you to a fishing wharf. This will mark the end of the trail. You will also be able to observe wildlife in the area as well. There are deer, foxes, eagles, hawks, moose and other animals which you will see while you are on the trail. At the same time, there are many types of wildflowers that are also in the area.
Another area which is a great point of interest is the Tantramar Wetlands Centre. The place is unique since it combines both elements of indoors and outdoors. The whole point of the centre is for you to be able to get an experience on what the wetlands is like through their educational programs. Alternately, you can also explore the trail in the area which spans 2.5 kilometres. Whether you are a local or a tourist, you will find it very educational to learn about the ecosystem of the Tantramar Marsh. From the very beginning to the current state of the marsh, the centre will be able to provide you with a worthwhile experience during your trip.
If you are into history, you might want to check out the Marshlands Inn. Built in 1850, the place was built by William Crane, who was a merchant and a politician. It was known as the Cogswell House back then, and was a present for his daughter and her husband. Over time, the inn’s name was changed to Marshlands which obviously comes from the breathtaking marshes in Tantramar. Around the area, the populated place is called Sackville. The town is very near the marsh so if you are in the area, it wouldn’t hurt to go for a visit there as well. In addition, there are accommodations such as hotels and inns in the area such as the Tantramar Motel and the Coastal Inn. If you are planning a visit, book one of the hotels in the area so you can enjoy your stay to the fullest.
